Special Statement from Emil Kolb, Chair Regional Municipality of Peel Police Services Board

On March 7, 2011, the Toronto Star and related Torstar media outlets published an article entitled: 'Cash for Crime Victims Spent on Mayors' Galas'. The headline was factually incorrect and did a disservice to victims of crime, the Police Services Board and the entire Peel community.

The Board demanded The Toronto Star print a correction and extend an apology. On March 9, 2011, the Toronto Star published the following clarification:

"The Peel Police Services Board purchased tickets to private mayoral galas using funds from its "Special Fund" authorized under Section 132 of the Police Services Act.

The act states that any seized property that cannot be returned to its lawful owner may be sold by police and the board can "use the proceeds for any purpose that it considers in the public interest."

The fund is not related to a special fund for victim and crime prevention programs under the Ontario Civil Remedies Act, as described in a March 7 article about the board's purchase of several thousands of dollars' worth of gala tickets. And according to the police services board, the Special Fund was never intended for cash for crime victims."
