Peel Regional Police Receive $2.5 Million Towards Community Policing Partnerships Program

Brampton – On Wednesday, February 9, 2005 , at 10:00 a.m., The Honourable Linda Jeffrey, MPP for Brampton - Centre, presented Chief Noel P. Catney and members of the Chief’s Management Group with a cheque for $2,534,971.56, which is to be directed towards the Community Policing Partnerships Program.

In 1998, the Ministry of the Solicitor General and Correctional Services, now the Ministry of Community Safety and Correctional Services, announced an ongoing Community Policing Partnerships Program, which enables police services to hire additional front-line officers. The Community Policing Partnerships (CPP) Program provides cost-sharing transfer payments to municipalities to hire 1000 new front-line officers across the province.

The funding represents the Ministry of Community Safety and Correctional Services’ commitment towards the Community Policing Partnerships Program. To date, the Province of Ontario has contributed a total of $19,142,904.11 to Peel Regional Police in CPP grant funding.

“This innovative policing program is an excellent example of a cost-sharing partnership between the Ministry of Community Safety and Correctional Services, the Peel Police Services Board and Peel Regional Council. Funding under this program has enabled Peel Regional Police to hire additional front-line officers to serve the residents of Brampton and Mississauga. In addition to responding to calls for service, these officers have successfully enhanced community policing initiatives such as traffic enforcement, bicycle patrol, Street Crime Units and neighbourhood policing” said Chief Noel P. Catney.

Linda Jeffrey, MPP for Brampton - Centre, stated, “This funding will increase police visibility in our community to enhance traffic enforcement, school outreach programs and better enable our police to be proactive in dealing with drugs and street crime”.

“I would like to commend all the partners in this initiative,” says Councillor Carmen Corbasson, Vice-Chair of the Regional Municipality of Peel Police Services Board. “It demonstrates a very real, long term commitment to making a difference in enhancing the safety and security of our entire community.”
