Peel Regional Police - Police Chief elected as Chairman of Criminal Intelligence Service of Ontario

BRAMPTON, ON, Jan 23, 2002/CNW/ - Emil Kolb, Chairman of the Region of Peel, was elected to serve his eighth term as Chair of the Regional Municipality of Peel Police Services Board by the members of the Board at its meeting held on January 18, 2002. Mississauga resident Jim Murray was elected as Vice-Chair, replacing Gary Harley, who had served in that position for the previous year.

"I want to thank the members for their support. I've been able to continue in this role because of the dedication and support of current and past members of the Board," says Mr. Kolb. "I've enjoyed my role with the Police Services Board, and I'm proud of the challenges we've met and overcome."

"Our goal has to be to work in conjunction with Chief Noel Catney and the leadership of the Peel Regional Police to ensure the very unique challenges of the time we live in are met and overcome."

Mr. Kolb was elected as Chairman and Chief Executive Officer of Peel Regional Council on December 12, 1991, and shortly after was elected to the Police Services Board. He served as Mayor of the Town of Caledon from 1985 to 1991, and as a Regional Councillor since the establishment of Regional Government in 1974. He is currently a member of the Canadian Association of Police Boards, the national organization representing civilian groups overseeing local police services across Canada.

Mr. Jim Murray, a Mississauga businessman renowned for his community involvement, was appointed to the Regional Municipality of Peel Police Services Board on July 23, 1997. He is also on the Board of Directors of the Ontario Association of Police Services Boards.

The recipient of the Gordon M. Shipp Memorial Award in 1996 as Mississauga's "Citizen of the Year", Mr. Murray sits on the Board of Governors of the Credit Valley Hospital, and is also involved in fundraising for the Mississauga Living Arts Centre and the Peel Museum. Among other activities, he has been Chair of the "Annual Mayor's Gala for the Arts", a founding director of the Peel Regional Housing Authority, and a member of the Board of the Counter Act Anti-Vandalism Committee. During his tenure as a member of the Kinsmen Club, Mr. Murray was involved in numerous projects that, among other awards, led him to be honoured as Kinsmen of the Year and to be named, at the age of 33, the youngest ever Life Member.

Mr. Murray has spent his business career in the Mississauga area in the field of commercial real estate. He is currently a Senior Vice President and Partner with J.J. Barnicke, a major commercial real estate company.

"I am very pleased to serve as Vice-Chair of this Board," says Mr. Murray. "Over the past four years, I have learned just how important and vital the role is of a police services board. I've also been greatly impressed by the talent and dedication of all our staff and I very much look forward to adding my efforts to their own."

The election of the Chair and Vice-Chair for the Police Services Board is consistent with the provisions of Section 28 of the Police Services Act, which requires the Board to select its executive officers at the first meeting of the calendar year.

The Regional Municipality of Peel Police Services Board is responsible for the provision of police services in the Region. It is comprised of three Regional Councillors, a private citizen appointed by Council, and three members appointed by the provincial government.
