Peel Deputy Seconded to the Province

BRAMPTON, ON, Feb. 28 /CNW/ - Deputy Chief Ron Bain of the Peel Regional Police has been seconded to work on a special project for the Ontario Government, says Emil Kolb, Chair, Regional Municipality of Peel Police Services Board, and Regional Chairman of Peel.

Mr. Kolb says the project was announced by the Honourable Robert Runciman, Minister of Public Safety and Security at an event held February 25, 2003, and would see Deputy Chief Bain undertake a review of the amount of paperwork police officers are required to complete as part of their regular duties.

Mr. Kolb says the goal is to reduce the amount of time police officers spend on these duties, and increase the time spent on active patrolling and front-line activities. The secondment is for a minimum of six months and will take effect early next month.

"The Peel Police Services Board is very pleased to partner with the Ontario government in this important initiative," says Mr. Kolb. "The work that Ron will be doing promises to benefit every police officer and every police service in the Province."

Mr. Kolb says the Peel Police Services Board and Peel Regional Police have long held a philosophy of leadership that extends beyond its own borders, and this is another example of that approach.

"We will definitely miss Ron," says Mr Kolb, "but we're fortunate in having a number of capable senior police officers that can step up to fill the gap."

Mr. Kolb says that, effective the date of the secondment, Staff Superintendent Mike Metcalf will be appointed as Acting Deputy Chief.

The Peel Regional Police is the second largest municipal police service in Ontario, with almost 2,000 police officers and civilian support staff. Under the leadership of Chief N. Catney, it polices the cities of Brampton and Mississauga, and also polices Pearson International Airport under contract with the Greater Toronto Airport Authority.
