Chief Michael Metcalf Announces Retirement
(BRAMPTON) – Chief Michael Metcalf, at a meeting held February 28, 2012, advised the Regional Municipality of Peel Police Services Board of his intent to retire says Emil Kolb, Chair of the Board. Mr. Kolb says Chief Metcalf will be in office until March 30, 2012, with his formal retirement occurring sometime in the Summer, 2012.
“It is with regret that the Board heard of Chief Metcalf’s plans to retire,” says Mr. Kolb. “At the same time, he has done an outstanding job as a community leader, a police officer and most recently as Chief of Police. He has promoted excellence in all activities, making the Peel Regional Police one of the truly outstanding police services in Canada.”
Mr. Kolb says Chief Metcalf commenced his career with the Mississauga Police Department in 1971. He attained a series of promotions, culminating in being appointed the fifth Chief of Police for the Peel Regional Police on January 1, 2006. Mr. Kolb says Chief Metcalf’s tenure will be remembered for the introduction of new and innovative programs such as Enterprise Risk Management and Organizational Wellness. This record of achievement culminated with the Peel Regional Police being named in 2012 as one of the top employers in the Greater Toronto Area.
Mr. Kolb says Chief Metcalf will be remembered as strong and caring advocate for the entire Region of Peel. “I think it says a great deal that under Mike’s leadership the Peel Regional Police has raised over $1 million per year for charities, many of them to support children,” says Mr. Kolb. “Through his actions and presence, in my view he personified the very concept of ‘community’ policing.”
Mr. Kolb says that Chief Metcalf’s retirement will end an era, as he is the sole remaining sworn member of one of the five police services that amalgamated to form the Peel Regional Police in 1974.
“We’re going to miss Mike’s humour, his common sense and his ability to get things done quietly, efficiently and always with an eye to the effective use of every tax dollar,” says Mr. Kolb. “We wish him, his wife Barb and his entire family the very best in the years ahead.”
The Peel Regional Police was formed in 1974 and was an amalgamation of five local police services, namely Brampton, Chinguacousy, Mississauga, Port Credit and Streetsville. It is now the third largest police service in Ontario with a complement of approximately 1,900 officers and 900 civilian members.
