Chief Jennifer Evans Announces Retirement

BRAMPTON – The Peel Police Services Board accepted the notice of retirement from Chief Jennifer Evans, effective January 12, 2019, following over 35 years of service, including 6 years as Chief of Police.

Chief Jennifer Evans began her career with Peel Regional Police in 1983, when she joined as a Cadet. Since that time she has progressed throughout the organization with memorable assignments and has extensive experience in criminal investigations. In 1996, Chief Evans assisted Justice Archie Campbell in the review involving serial rapist and murderer Paul Bernardo. She later accepted a two year secondment to work as a Violent Crime Analyst at the Provincial ViCLAS Centre in Orillia. Chief Evans also worked throughout the province for the Office of the Chief Coroner as an investigator. Upon her return to Peel, she worked as a Detective in the Homicide and Missing Persons Bureau, and several promotions later returned as the Inspector in charge. In 2008 she was promoted to Deputy Chief of Police and later assisted Commissioner Oppal in reviewing the police investigation for the Missing Women Commission of Inquiry. On October 12, 2012, she was appointed as Chief of the Peel Regional Police.

In May of 2013, Chief Evans was appointed to the Order of Merit of the Police Forces by the Governor General of Canada at a ceremony at Rideau Hall in Ottawa and in the past has served as the President of the Ontario Association of Chiefs of Police (OACP), and was on the Board of Directors for the Canadian Association of Chiefs of Police and the Major Cities Chiefs Association.

"It has been my honour and privilege to have served the citizens of the Regional of Peel as a police officer for over 35 years including six years as Chief of Police. I am looking forward to retirement to spend more time with my husband and family. My vision for Peel Regional Police is a Safer Community Together and I believe I have set this foundation for the future of community safety in Peel."

Speaking on behalf of her Board colleagues, Chair Norma Nicholson expressed her appreciation and gratitude to Chief Evans for her many years of service to the community and to Peel Regional Police.

"Chief Evans has had a long and successful career, having always put the well-being of the community first," said Nicholson. "She should be as proud of her career as the Board is for having had the pleasure to work so closely with one of Canada’s finest and most accomplished Chiefs of Police. She epitomizes the values of teamwork, leadership, and public service. She has dedicated her career to improving the quality of life in our community and always serving the residents of Mississauga and Brampton. On behalf of the Board, we extend our heartfelt gratitude to Chief Evans for her invaluable contribution to policing, and wish her all the best in her retirement."

Chair Nicholson said the Board will begin a process to recruit and hire a new Chief of Police and ensure that details of that process and Board decisions are communicated to the community.
