Peel PSB Appoints a New Deputy Chief
(BRAMPTON) - Michael Metcalf, a 32-year veteran of the Peel Regional Police, has been appointed Deputy Chief of Police for the Peel Regional Police, effective January 1, 2004, says Mr. Emil Kolb, Chair, Regional Municipality of Peel Police Services Board. Deputy Chief Metcalf will be replacing Deputy Chief Ron Bain who is retiring.
"The Board is thrilled to have a person of Mike's quality and integrity to assume this challenging, leadership role," says Mr. Kolb. "He has demonstrated, especially during the past number of months, the required skills and dedication to earn the full confidence of the Board and our Chief of Police."
Mr. Kolb says the Board's decision to appoint Deputy Chief Metcalf took place after it reviewed all the relevant information, and determined that it already had the best person available to become its Deputy Chief.
Deputy Chief Metcalf assumed his career in policing on January 4, 1971. He has served in a number of areas, including Criminal Investigation Bureau, Identification Services, Morality Bureau, and as Divisional Superintendent. He was promoted to Staff Superintendent in November, 2001, and since March, 2003 has been Acting Deputy Chief in place of Deputy Chief Bain who was on secondment to the provincial government. Deputy Chief Metcalf has been married for the past 33 years to his wife, Barbara, and has two daughters attending university in Ontario.
"The Board wants to acknowledge and thank Deputy Chief Bain for his years of devoted service," says Mr. Kolb. "We feel ourselves in a very fortunate position to have such a qualified individual as Mike available to step forward immediately and assume this vital role."
Chief Catney says, "I was truly delighted to be informed that the Board had selected Michael Metcalf as Deputy Chief of Police. His experience, knowledge and loyalty to the police service and our community will position us very well to confront the significant challenges that undoubtedly lie ahead."
"To be selected Deputy Chief is both an honour and a privilege," says Deputy Chief Metcalf. "I look forward to continuing to serve our community, and in doing so, to work with the members of our police service who in so many ways exemplify professionalism in policing."
The Peel Regional Police is the second largest municipal police service in Ontario, with over 2,000 sworn and civilian members. It provides policing services to over one million residents in the Region of Peel, in the cities of Brampton and Mississauga.
