Peel Police Services Board Initiates Community Consultations on Governance and Human Rights

BRAMPTON – The Peel Police Services Board's Governance & Human Rights (GHR) Committee announced the commencement of a series of community consultations, dedicated to engaging stakeholders and the broader community on crucial matters concerning police governance and human rights. The inaugural consultation, an open session, is scheduled for September 5, 2023, at 6:00 pm, and will be held at the Region of Peel Council Chambers.

Prioritizing Community Voices:

At the core of the GHR Committee’s approach lies the firm belief in the significance of public consultation, particularly in enhancing trust and legitimacy within the community as it relates to policing and police governance. The forthcoming consultations will explore distinct themes related to police governance and human rights, with the first session serving as a platform to initiate inclusive discussions for a shared vision.

Embracing Your Participation:

The Board and GHR Committee strongly encourages participation from our community. During these consultations, community members and groups will have an opportunity to present their views and lived experiences during 5-minute presentations to allow committee members to engage with questions and comments to gain deeper insights, paving the path for meaningful governance and policy adjustments. Together, we will address issues such as systemic racism, anti-Black and anti-Indigenous racism, and to promote fairness and equity in policing.

Transparency and Accessibility:

The GHR Committee is committed to the principles of transparency and accessibility. As such, we are pleased to announce that all community consultations will be hosted in the evenings and sessions will be livestreamed on our website at peelpoliceboard.ca, ensuring a wider reach and inclusive engagement. Additionally, recordings of these sessions will be archived for easy reference and continued community outreach.

"We are committed to listening to our community's voices and ensuring that our governance and policies align with the values and needs of the people we serve," said Sumeeta Kohli, Chair of the GHR Committee and Vice-Chair of the Peel Police Services Board. "Through these consultations, we hope to strengthen trust and foster a more transparent and accountable relationship with the community."

We extend a warm invitation to all community members, organizations, and stakeholders to actively participate in the first community consultation, taking place on September 5, 2023, at 6:00 pm. Your invaluable input will help shape our shared future and enhance our governance and policies.
