Peel Police Services Board and Peel Regional Police Move Forward with Auto Thefts and Carjackings Summit

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

Brampton, ON – The Peel Police Services Board and Peel Regional Police are taking decisive action to tackle the growing problem of auto thefts and carjackings in Peel Region.

In response to the concerns of the community, Board Chair Ron Chatha and Police Chief Nishan Duraiappah previously announced that they will host a summit on the issue. The summit will be hosted on March 10, 2023, at the Toronto Airport Marriott. The summit will be livestreamed, making it accessible to a wider audience.

Mayors, Regional Chairs, Police Services Board Chairs and Police Chiefs in Toronto, York, Durham, Halton, Hamilton, Ottawa and Niagara have been invited to join the discussions, in addition to members of the OPP, CBSA, the GTAA and other key partners, including representatives from the provincial and federal governments. The summit is aimed at generating concrete actions to reduce auto thefts and carjackings and increase solvency rates.

“As a Board, we have been advocating for increased action to address car thefts and carjackings,” said Police Services Board Chair Ron Chatha. “Having been recently re-elected Chair of the Board, I want to ensure our community knows this issue is our top priority. We will continue to work with our partners as this problem transcends borders and requires a multi-jurisdictional solution.”

In spring 2022, the Board introduced a motion to work with Chief Duraiappah and Peel Regional Police to reduce car thefts in Peel. The Board also sought support from Members of Parliament and Members of Provincial Parliament on a joint approach to tackle the issue.

The summit on March 10, 2023, will be a critical step in the ongoing efforts to reduce auto thefts and carjackings in Peel Region and provide a safer community for residents across the province.
