Peel Police Services Board and Peel Regional Police Continue to Address Auto thefts and Carjackings - Peel to Host Mayors, Police Chiefs and Board Chairs Summit on Auto Thefts and Carjackings

Brampton - The Peel Police Services Board and Peel Regional Police today moved forward on efforts to tackle auto thefts and carjackings in Peel. As auto thefts and carjackings continue to increase across Peel Region, community members have asked for decisive action to address the problem.

At today’s Board meeting, Board Chair Ron Chatha and Police Chief Nishan Duraiappah committed to host a summit on auto thefts and carjackings. In a joint letter, the Mayors, Board Chairs and Police Chiefs in Toronto, York, Durham, Halton, Hamilton and Niagara will be invited to participate in discussions aimed at concrete actions to reduce auto thefts and carjackings and help increase solvency rates.

“As a Board, we have been advocated for increased action to address car thefts and carjackings,” said Police Services Board Chair Ron Chatha. “While we are seeing some positive actions, many members of the community are still concerned by this issue.”

In spring 2022, the Board introduced a motion at a police services board meeting to work with Chief Duraiappah and Peel Regional Police on concrete measures to reduce car thefts in Peel. Letters were also sent to Members of Parliament and Members of Provincial Parliament seeking their support on a joint approach to address this issue. Today’s actions will build on the work already being done by Peel Regional Police.

“Here in Peel Region, and together with our policing partners across the GTHA, the province and Canada, our investigative efforts have had a significant impact on criminal organizations and auto-theft rings in 2022. But more needs to be done,” said Peel Regional Police Chief Nishan Duraiappah. “Through multi-jurisdictional collaborations, we can continue to dismantle these organizations that are victimizing our communities, and proactively educate our residents on theft prevention and consumer protection measures.”
