Auto Theft Summit Focuses on Industry-Wide Solutions to Curb Car Theft

Region of Peel – To highlight the growing issue of vehicle theft and car jackings in Ontario, the Peel Police Services Board and Peel Regional Police, along with policing partners, hosted its first-ever auto theft symposium. Auto Theft Summit 2023 kicked off vital discussions about the impact of auto theft on Ontario’s residents and brought together thought-leaders from all impacted sectors to share ideas, perspectives and address the issue. Since 2018, there has been a nearly 90% increase in auto thefts across the police services attending the summit.

“Organized auto theft is a priority for our community and service. It impacts the safety and well-being of residents and has become a major revenue source for organized crime,” said Chief Nishan Duraiappah. “I am thankful for all of our stakeholders and partners at the auto theft summit and their commitment to begin addressing the issue.”

The event featured an intimate discussion with Chief’s of Police from across the province and an in-depth panel conversation, including stakeholders from auto manufacturers, insurance and government partners from multiple levels.

"As Chair of the Peel Police Services Board, my top priority for over a year has been addressing auto thefts and car jackings. Auto Theft Summit 2023 reflects the Board's dedication to prioritizing the safety of our communities,” said Police Services Board Chair Ron Chatha. “Through our efforts, the Board has taken great strides to ensure that our police service is equipped to combat auto thefts effectively. By bringing together police services and stakeholder partners across Ontario, we demonstrate our unwavering commitment to finding solutions to this issue and creating safer communities."

The summit culminated with a commitment to move forward on the summit themes of building greater awareness, collaborative partner solutions and real action through enforcement.
